Shedding the Spotlight on Seasonal Affective Disorder and Sleeping Problems
Seattle is known for many things and not only strong coffee, punk rock and fresh seafood, but also its extended rainy season. Many people may not realize just how gloomy Washington State can be from November to February. In a season when the sun rises around 8 a.m. and sets by mid-afternoon, many individuals experience limited sunlight which may be related to the occurrence of sleeping disorders and/or seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Symptoms of this disorder include depression, suicidal thoughts and sluggishness. To combat this problem, Seattle-based Microsoft is offering its employees $1,000 to purchase light boxes and dawn simulators to combat potential sleeping problems and symptoms of SAD. About 200 employees have taken advantage of the benefit thus far, and other employers and insurance companies are taking note. Apparently, the increase in productivity and energy for those who have tried light therapy is encouraging to those who spend their winters in the dark. -- National Sleep Foundation
